| CASE HARDENING: Surface hardening involving a change in the composition of the outer layer of an iron-base alloy in which the surface is made substantically harder by inward diffusion of a gas or liquid followed by appropriate thermal treatment. CARBONITRIDE: Carbonitriding is a lower cost surface hardening process that provides a thin, high hardness case on lower hardenability steels. The process imparts wear resistance and improvements in strength. TEMPER: Heating a quench hardened or normalized ferrous alloy to a temperature below the transformation range to produce desired changes in properties. BLAST CLEANING: Shot blasting consists of attacking the surface of a material with one of many types of shots. STRAIGHTEN: Mechanical operation to manipulate ferrous steel, deformed from heat treat or other process induced distortion, to within customer specified tolerances. ANNEAL: The heat treatment process by which steel products are re-heated to a suitable temperature in order to remove stresses resulting from previous processing and to soften them and/or improve their machinability and cold forming properties. INDUCTION ANNEAL: Induction Annealing is a metal heat treatment in which a metal material is exposed to an elevated temperature for an extended time and then slowly cooled. ISO THERMAL ANNEAL: Heating to and holding at a temperature above the transformation range, then cooling to and holding at a suitable temperature until the austenite to pearlite change is complete. |
